Sharpe's practice is a skirmish rule set for the era of black powder in the 18-19th centuries. The game itself is pretty darn simple but the real meat of the game comes from the random activation of unit through card or tokens. Also the units themselves have special abilities that can be activated once enough command cards have been played. This alone makes the game tense and interesting. Last night we had five players 2 playing the British. I played the Brits and took control of the kings German legion riflemen. the object was for the Brits to rescue a Portuguese officer that the French had captured and the French objective was for them to stop us from doing so and also kill Major Sharpe who most any Napoleonic or wargaming buff would recognize.
The Brits started off outnumbered but we quickly gained advantage in the deployment gathering all of our forces on the extreme left with the objective while the French all ready deployed before us chose to deploy in the center.
The first turn did not see much action but by the second turn the British kgl and 95th rifles started delivering a withering volley to the outnumbered French on the left flank. By turn 3 the french had started reinforcing their position and an all out firefight ensued with neither side gaining a clear advantage. Also French reinforcements had started to arrive and started creeping up on our right flank which was totally exposed.
Turn 4 my kgl started breaking through and starting making a sneak attack towards the objective while the Remaining French on our left where held at bay by the 95th. Over to the right the French line had reached our flank and we starting receiving heavy fire in that direction.
But the French advantage did not last long when we received surprise reinforcements that appeared behind the French line that where outflanking us and the tables turned on both flanks. I managed to finally rout the grenadiers that where assigned to the objective and came right up on it.
By turn 6 my KGL had taken a french officer prisoner and attracted all the attention as the French madly tried to stop us winning the game with fire from behind and a bold rallying charge from the remaining French grenadiers. But this was not enough to rout the brave KGL and this ended up not only completely destroying the grenadiers but also diverting the remaining french line troops so the Portuguese allies could unleash a deadly surprise charge into their rear. At this point the French surrendered or routed the field and not only did the Brits rescue the general but we also took a few prisoners and eagles back to camp with us.
